MLUG scores another successful meeting at Birmingham City University

MLUG continues to go from strength to strength with new members joining the group from across the country. Argenta additionally delivered a session to BCU students in order to give them an insight in to LabVIEW and how they can get involved after finishing their degree.

The MLUG attendees were invited to Birmingham City University for an afternoon of LabVIEW chatter with a pinch of TestStand thrown in for good measure, software which not all members have used before but one that they’re familiar with due to its link to LabVIEW.

The first presentation was delivered by a National Instruments LabVIEW Champion, Chris Roebuck, who is a partner at Delacor and co-organiser of the Central South User Group. He came all the way from the South coast to join us and provided an insight in to how to create reusable, scalable LabVIEW modules which plug directly into TestStand but can just as easily be tested separately or deployed unchanged in stand-alone control applications. Whilst some of the audience had used TestStand before many were in unchartered territory, however with a dynamic and detailed presentation Chris was able to effectively interact with the group in order to provide further detail or reinforcement about the subject area which went down well.

For the second part of the afternoon the group were joined by twenty Undergraduate students who had spent the previous two hours with Chris Woodhams, Director at Argenta, getting to grips with the basics of LabVIEW and what it can do. This was well received with lots of enthusiasm and interaction. Chris commented that “he really enjoyed the session with the students. It was great to see an enthusiasm in learning about LabVIEW and the practical session demonstrated the ease at which it is possible to pick up the basics of LabVIEW”. Argenta hope that this is something they can continue to do with students in association with National Instruments.

The students and MLUG attendees worked through a Coding Challenging completed by some members of the group for discussion in order to see the intricacies of LabVIEW at work. Successful applications were rewarded with an Argenta mug and some Minstrels! The students found this of particular interest as it gave them practical interaction with the software.

This led on to a case study presentation by Dawid Wozny who is a Systems Developer and Implementer at Argenta. This was based on a recent project that Argenta completed for Controlled Power Technologies (CPT) to develop and commission a fully automated dynamometer test rig for Integrated Starter Generators (ISG) used in hybrid vehicles. The role of Argenta within the project was to provide a software application to simulate the use during the lifetime of the component. The use of a case study gives the audience a great way of seeing LabVIEW in practice, perhaps in a setting that they themselves haven’t worked in therefore enabling different uses to be explored.

Argenta and the MLUG would like to extend our thanks to the School of Computing and Digital Technology at Birmingham City University for the use of their facilities and provision of refreshments.

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta’s office on 0121 318 6363 to register and be sent details of the Coding Challenge.

Our previous meetings have all been well received and importantly well attended with many regulars attending which is fantastic!

Once again we are welcoming speakers to talk about their latest innovative projects. There’s time to ask questions and enjoy networking with fellow practitioners. We have also introduced a new segment to the meeting– a ‘show and tell’ session with a coding challenge!

We’re meeting at:

Birmingham City University
Curzon Street, Birmingham
