Our most successful Midlands LabVIEW User Group yet!

The latest MLUG meeting, held last week at ZF TRW, had the biggest turnout of attendees since the group started in October 2014.

There was a fantastic line-up along with wonderful hospitality from our host Ian Deaville of ZF TRW.

Matt Surridge from National Instruments started the meeting off with his presentation on Channel Wires. As something new to LabVIEW 2016 it was a topic that had been requested by attendees at previous meetings, with most of the audience being aware of it but not having used it before. This gave Matt the opportunity to provide a really detailed overview of what it can do, with many practical examples of how channel wires can be used.

It was then over to Media Mongrels’ Sam Sharp, who gave a great insight in to how he is bringing LabVIEW to the internet. Not something which is commonly done and so again an aspect which many of the audience had limited experience of. He showed how Web Sockets can be used to develop attractive UIs for interaction via the web. Sam showed us some examples of how he is using this approach for condition monitoring on his barge.

Sam has kindly shared his presentation.

To close the meeting Ian Deaville provided a thoughtful insight in to a project which ZF TRW has been involved with since 2008. Having taken the project over from a supplier, which combined LabVIEW and Real Time PXI, Ian explained the journey that he’s been on. This provoked discussion about project management as well as technical approaches. Ian shared the challenges he has faced over the course of the project and the solutions he developed.

The coding challenge saw a range of different approaches to Tetris in LabVIEW, the main challenge that came up was relating to the rotation of non-symmetrical shapes, if you have any thoughts, get in touch!

Our next meeting is due to take place on Monday 5th February from 12.45pm at Rolls-Royce’s Derwent facility on the Birmingham Business Park. We are organising the agenda at the moment and this will be confirmed later in the year. So for the moment, put the date in your diary!

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. It is also a great Continuous Professional Development opportunity and can also contribute to re-validation.

Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta's office to register and be sent details of the Coding Challenge when available.
