Martin Griffiths – Metis Automation

Martin is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and also a Certified LabVIEW Architect. He is one of only 40 LabVIEW Architects in the UK and he scored 100% on the Architect exam. He is the senior software engineer for Metis Automation, where he has worked for the past four years. Martin now heads a professional and friendly team of software engineers at Metis Automation.

Martin has spent his 12 year career working as an engineer. He has always had a passion for making things work and so he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Liverpool where he gained his Masters degree. Since then he has worked on and overseen many exciting, innovative projects in a variety of industries including; testing part of a solar orbiter device which was created to get closer to the sun than has ever been possible before and working on the control and automation of a subsea drilling system – ROV Drill, for Canyon Offshore.

Martin will be speaking about his experiences working on ROV Drill on a boat off the coast of Japan - during a hurricane!

Presentation Overview:
Learn how off-the-shelf hardware was used to develop a custom machine control system for a subsea ROV drill. The system had to be familiar to ROV pilots, whilst adding the capability to create custom drilling configurations during subsea operations and high speed datalogging. The ROV Drill opens up drilling locations where more traditional drill ships would struggle to gain access.

David Maidman – Control Software Solutions

David was first introduced to LabVIEW in 1998 whilst studying Electronic Systems and Control Engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, and even though he had little interest in software for his final project he was able to develop a LabVIEW based control system for control of a temperature control process. After graduating he worked as an instrumentation/electronics engineer before returning to Sheffield Hallam to work developing LabVIEW based control systems for servo-hydraulic and servo-pneumatic test machines for material testing. David continued to work in the field of material test machines for a number of years before moving to an NI Alliance Partner company/consultancy primarily developing LabVIEW based control systems for test rigs used in the aerospace industry. In 2012 he started to work for his own company Control Software Solutions, also an NI Alliance Partner company, where he is a Certified LabVIEW Architect working on projects ranging from medical device, factory automation and aerospace test rigs.

The Unit Test Framework: -
The Unit Test Framework is a software development tool within the LabVIEW project environment that aides the development of robust applications. Through use of the Unit Test Framework developers will be naturally encouraged to develop code that is modular and easy to read and test. The aim of this presentation is show how the Unit Test Framework can be used to catch the most common bugs before your application reaches your customer saving you time and money.
