National Instruments' Automated Test Summit 2015

Chris Woodhams had the opportunity to attend the Automated Test Summit last week, which this year was held at the Madejski Stadium in Reading and organised by National Instruments.

The event was aimed at engineers working within a wide range of different industries including aerospace and defence which gave Chris the opportunity to catch up with existing acquaintances but to also do some valuable networking.

There were are number of different Keynote speakers but also many seminar sessions including one that focused on Managing Hardware Obsolescence and Emulating Legacy Equipment with Software-Designed Instruments. One of the discussions in this session was around how much consideration should be put into handling changes to hardware and software. Chris found this session particularly interesting and commented that ‘having recently been involved in a site upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, I would definitely put more consideration into this in the future. On the other hand, attempting to mitigate all possibilities can cause its own problems’.

An opportunity was provided to delegates to get ‘hands on’ with a variety of different NI hardware. One that was of particular interest to Chris was the introduction to RF test using NI’s PXI Vector Signal Transceiver. As a Mechanical Engineer he acknowledged that ‘this area has always been a bit grey as I rely on others in the team for these subjects, but the way the session was run made it possible to get to grips with some of the fundamentals’.
