Super sized Summer MLUG goes off with a LabVIEW bang!

The latest Midlands LabVIEW User Group took place last week at the Manufacturing Technology Centre. There were a diverse range of presentations coupled with the Coding Challenge and a tour of the MTC workshop which was a particular highlight for the attendees.

It was great to welcome some new faces to the meeting and of course welcome back many more familiar ones!

The Summer MLUG started off with a round table discussion to get input from the attending members about what they would like to see in future meetings – lots of ideas have been put forward so we are working on finding suitable presenters. We had a great response to the coding challenge so it was chocolate all round! There were some interesting approaches to using user events, especially with the introduction of dynamic registration, here's Chris’ attempt at a simple solution.

We were fortunate to welcome Steve Watts, who is a Software Designer and Owner at SSDC Ltd and a Certified LabVIEW Architect. For those that were disappointed to miss out on NI Week in Austin, Texas earlier this month, it was a great opportunity to hear from Steve as he delivered his conference presentation.

Steve’s presentation was called ‘The SSDC Way: Desired Paths to a Simple Software Process’. It delivered a great insight in to how the 30+ years' experience of each SSDC developer has taught them how to strip away all the hard bits and describe the EASIEST ways to run a software process. As identified by Steve, this may not be the most perfect method, but it is the simplest that ticks all the necessary boxes.

We were also delighted to have Ian Thompson who presented on behalf of the MTC. Ian talked about their work with myRio in the SitSki and Shaft monitoring project, which focused on developing an application for acquiring data from multiple sensors in a very tight timescale.

Last but not least, Dave Barr, who is a Systems Engineer at Product Technology Partners Ltd, he’s a Certified LabVIEW Architect and Certified TestStand Developer. He talked to the group about an architecture that he has used on a number of machine control projects. This utilises ethercat IO and a plugin architecture to create reconfigurable and expandable systems at runtime.

The event received a lot of positive feedback with many commenting on the workshop tour and the interesting speakers we had been able to organise. We would like to thank the MTC and National Instruments for supporting the group once again with provision of the meeting facilities.

Our next User Group is due to take place on Monday 2nd October from 12.45pm, the lineup of speakers and venue are to be confirmed but please put this in your diary now!

Anyone who either uses LabVIEW within their current role or works with LabVIEW would be sure to find this event useful and informative, as well as being a good opportunity to network. Those interested in attending this free event should contact Jenny Bragg via email (mlug@argentaconsult.com) or call Argenta’s office on 0121 318 6363 to register and be sent details of the Coding Challenge.

Argenta host the Midlands LabVIEW User Group three times a year, it is free to come along, with details about our previous meeting here.
